CINELLI FRANCESCO LUIGI
July, 19, 1939. Torgiano (Perugia) Italy
Mother tongue:Italian Other languages: French, Spanish and English.
Graduate in Biological Sciences from the University of Florence with a first underwater thesis of this university, he gravitated towards the study of marine algae, the properties and characteristics of which, at the time, were little known.
Prominent protagonist of the world of marine biology, especially of that which had a great development since the 1970s thanks to the possibilities provided by scuba diving.
In 1969 was among the founding members of the Italian Society of Marine Biology (SIBM), to which he always gave his scientific contribution as a member of both the Benthos Committee and the Board of Directors and being often a speaker at annual congresses and thematic workshops. In 1970 he was in charge of the Benthos Ecology Laboratory of the Naples “Anton Dohrn” Zoological Station.
In 1980 he was called to fill the role of full professor of Marine Ecology at the University of Pisa
Marine Biology will become his chosen field, diligent and scrupulous study of marine algae his passion making him become more and more known, so much so to obtain from the scientific world, well deserved and prestigious recognition, culminating, in time, in the position of Director of his University Department of Environmental Sciences.
In 1989 found the International School for Scientifci Diving (I.S.S.D.) to make International Scientific Scuba Diving Courses for students and postgraduates,
This interesting and intensified activity will lead to the International ‘Golden Trident’ award and as a consequence to the title of Academic of the International Academy of Underwater Science and Techniques, of which he will become President.
This in turn will lead to more sought-after assignments, which time after time he will face with undiminished enthusiasm.
International experiences
2010 Study trip to Cocos Island (Costa Rica), Pacific Ocean. 2002-2005 Bionomic studies for the realization of a project for the construction of an underwater observatory in the National Park of Ras Mohammed (Sinai- Egypt). The Red Sea. 2004 Study Travel in Indonesian Borneo (Indian Ocean). 2001-2003 Research on Posidonia meadows along the coast of Western Australia (from Cape Naturalist in Exmouth). Indian Ocean. 2000 Investigations on underwater flora of the North Island (New Zealand) and the Cook Islands. Pacific Ocean. 1998 Study trip to the Seychelles Islands. Research on the marine flora of the coast of Somalia. Indian Ocean. 1983-1987 Studies divers to the knowledge of the ecology and biology of coral reefs of the Maldives (Alimatha island), Indian Ocean. Didactic coordination of the University of Asmara (Eritrea) and creation of a marine laboratory at Massawa (Red Sea). Study trip to the islands Dahlack. ! 981-1982 Studies on the ecology and biology of coral reefs and associated algal flora of the island of Zabargad (Red Sea). Technical skills and competences Biological sampling, processing of experimental designs in field ecology, statistical analysis methods, taxonomy of phytobenthos, methods of bionomic mapping, scientific diving, GIS, bionomic cartography, research management, ecology and biology of tropical reefs, reforestation of sea grasses, development of algal biomass for biogas production and extraction of pharmacological active products, photos and videos underwater and terrestrial. Evaluator for the European Union of international research programs in Marine Sciences, he held this role for several years. During his participation in the International project "Oxic anoxic interfaces as productive sites" he discovered and filmed for the first time in the world, in the Blue Cave of Palinuro, the reproduction activity of the Mediterranean madreporians Astroides calycularis. In addition to this, it has contributed to identifying the food chain based on chemosynthesis which, in the sea caves where there are sources of hydrogen sulfide, is completely similar to that discovered in the 1980s by Ballard in the oceanic ridges of the Pacific depth. One of the most interesting discoveries of his scientific career was that of the identification, with his colleague Boudouresque of the University of Marseilles, of the "biological zero" of that area of the marine coasts above which there are only "terrestrial" organisms and beyond under which only "maritime" organisms live. He has identified and described many little-known species of algae and some new to the Mediterranean. Creation of innovative systems for the reforestation of Posidonia oceanic meadows and tools for analyzing various physical and chemical submarines parameters was other activities.. To live and work with other people in multicultural and multiethnic where intergroup relations are of special importance (Somalia, Ethiopia, the Arabian Peninsula, Israel, Egypt, South and Central America, Japan. Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand). Ability to work in team and in extreme situations (Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, East Africa). To carry out underwater surveys with bionomic surveys and sampling, geomorphological and biological or using diving means that wire-guided or audio equipment (ROV, Side Scan Sonar, Multi-beam). Capacity derived from activities over forty years of collaboration with various universities and various research institutes in Italy and abroad, and with the experience at the Laboratory of Ecology of the Benthos of the Zoological Station in Naples and at the University of Pisa and participation in various research projects both nationally and internationally. President of the International School for Scientific Diving Past President of the International Academy of Underwater Sciences and Techniques Prize "Golden Trident" for scientific diving (1982). Member of AAUS (American Academy of Underwater Sciences). Member of the Italian Society of Marine Biology (SIBM). Memberof the Italian Oceanographic Association (AIOL) Member of the Italian Society of Ecology (SITE). Member of the Scientific Council of CONISMA (Inter-University Consortium for Marine Sciences). Member of the European Phycological Society. Member of the Societé Phicologique. de France
He is the author of many scientific papers published in national and international journals, hundreds of popular articles and three books on the life of the sea as well as the recently published bibliography (2018) "Born for the sea". Currently, alternating publishing activities with a love of flying and diving, he has started a new collaboration activity in Turkey with the University of Kacoeli for projects concerning the Sea of Marmara and with the Turkish Subaqua Club (TBK) in Istanbul, the oldest in Turkey, a common project for the establishment of international courses for Underwater Scientific Researchers.
