Aslında filoloji dillerin geçmişini inceler, bir anlamda "tarihsel dilbilimdir" ve bu nedenle dilbilimin bir alt kategorisi sayılır --Pinar 05:05, 22 Mayıs 2007 (UTC)

Ben Oxford İngilizce Sözlük'ten arama yapmıştım ve iki anlam verdi "(1) study of the structure, historical development, and relationships of a language or languages (2) literary or classical scholarship". Bu birinci anlam dilbilime yakın ama ikincisi "edebi ve klasik ilim" anlamına geliyor. en:Philology maddesinde de şu yazılı: "In the academic traditions of several nations, a wide sense of the term "philology" describes the study of a language together with its literature and the historical and cultural contexts that are indispensable for an understanding of the literary works and other culturally significant texts. Philology thus comprises the study of the grammar, rhetoric, history, interpretation of authors, and critical traditions associated with a given language." Yani dillerin tarihi yanı sıra o dillerin önemli edebi ve kültürel eserlerini ve yazarlarını da araştıran bir dal.
