PHOTONIC CRYSTAL DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED TO DEMONSTRATE NEGATIVE REFRACTION. PHOTONIC CRYSTALS WERE CONSTRUCTED BY AMES PHYSICISTS IN ORDER TO DEMONSTRATE NEGATIVE REFRACTION AND SUPERLENSING IN THE MICROWAVE REGION OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM. SCIENTISTS BELIEVE THAT EXPERIMENTS WITH THESE MATERIALS MAY LEAD TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TYPE OF FLAT SUPERLENS THAT OPERATES IN THE VISIBLE SPECTRUM, WHICH WOULD OFFER SUPERIOR RESOLUTION CAPTURING DETAIL MUCH SMALLER WHICH WOULD VASTLY IMPROVE IMAGING FOR BIOMEDICAL AND MATERIALS APPLICATIONS.
